Art Time: Cherry Blossom

We had this project in painting class, that we could work on for three weeks. It was a homage to flat art- for example Egyptian art, pop art, Japanese prints, etc. There was also leeway- if the project didn't exactly fit that criteria, we can still go with it, and make it awesome. So that's what I did! I combined pop art with Japanese prints. As soon as my art teacher explained the project, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I had the image in my head instantly, and I knew exactly how I would create it. So first I built myself a canvas. The board was 4'4" by 3'4", and the canvas material was about $15. It took me a long time to put the canvas board together, but I did it, and it was awesome. Gessoed it twice, then it was ready to paint on.

The college had an Open House, and I volunteered to paint during that time for the Visual Arts booth. Along comes a psychology student, a gentleman probably in his late 20s, inquiring about what I was doing. At this point I only had some coloured sqaures on, but I had pictures and a large board behind my canvas with a brief drawing of what the picture was going to look like. And guess who was instantly interested in buying it?! He gave me his name and e-mail, for me to send him a picture when I was finished, and he would buy it from me. (I have since finished and sent it to him, and he loves it. I plan to sell it to him on Wednesday :D)

The tree was created, the pond was installed, the branches are dipping into the middle of the pond, and the blossoms were added. It's now on display in the exhibition square, and will soon be sold to someone who loves it and is so excited to own it. It was super fun, it wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it was, and it's nice to know that I can create beautiful paintings in, essentially, under 24 hours.

I used all arylics, matte medium, gloss medium, and super heavy gloss medium, along with over 20 different colours, all from the Golden company. This is my Cherry Blossom.
