Art Time: Wax Sculptures

In sculpture in school we work with recycled clay, where we most the sculpture to look exactly how we want it to, then we make a mould out of it, either with silicone or plaster, and then we fill the mould with hot wax, fix the wax to look however we need it to look, and then if we want, we bronze it.

This particular image was actually created directly out of wax. I made a few flat sheets of wax, cut them out, soaked them in hot water, then moulded them and welded them together. This particular sculpture was the one that I decided to bronze, so I 'sprued' it up.
It's basically just attaching my wax sculpture to a weird wax stand that allows bronze to flow through the sculpture flawlessly, to make for a beautiful sculpture. It was really annoying to put together, but I am thankful to say it's OVER and I will be taking it out of the ceramic shell sometime this week.

These were the very first sculpture assignments we had. I think it took us weeks to get through, but we finally finished. They're called reliefs, or is it half reliefs? Where it's flat on one side and the image on the other. One of them was made out of square/flat edges, the other was all curvature, and the third was a combination of the two. I  made them out of clay, put a plaster mould over each one, then filled them up with wax. They're hollow on the inside, and I smoothed down the outsides with a soft sandpaper and paint thinner. My sculpture teacher was pleased with them. It seemed like forever ago when I actually did them, but I remember being quite stressed out because this was the first time I had ever done anything like this.
