This winter has been quite an experience for me, to say the least. It's been the first winter I've experienced while not being at home, since I'm going to college, but since I've been home for the holidays, it hasn't gotten any easier. Most of it comes down to preparation. As long as I'm prepared, I can handle anything. But the thing is, I feel like I'm never prepared. It's not as easy as it is during the summer, because I can't just run outside without a coat, hat, mitts, scarf, and several layers of clothing. Before I leave the house every day, I need to make sure I'm wearing enough layers to stay warm and I have all my winter accessories with me. But then I get too hot and have to shed some layers, so I have to make sure that each layer I'm wearing can fit with everything else I'm wearing. So there's that aspect. As well, when I was still in Red Deer going to school, and needed to ensure I had with me enough room in my backpack to stick in the extra layers I'm inevitably going to take off, as well as deodorant, lip chap, lotion, those normal things that a person needs to keep with them. I have also learned since starting school that I need to keep things such as my phone charger and change with me everywhere I go.
When I was coming home for Christmas, I only expected to be here from the eighth until about the 28th. As it turns out, I'm probably going to be here for an extra week. I wasn't expecting that, and I therefore didn't pack for that. I packed most of my painting stuff, because I've been working on the painting for my sister, and then I just packed the bare necessities. So the fashionista inside me is yelling at me for not having half the stuff I would like. But I can live with that. What I do need to start doing is carrying an emergency pack with me.
In my backpack that I already carry with me for school, I need to keep some extra items. A spare change of clothes, so whether that looks like layers I already wear or just an extra pair of sweatpants and socks, it just needs to be something. I also need to remember to always carry my phone charger with me along with my iPod charger. I also need to find myself a travel toothbrush and toothpaste thing. And a comb. And I need to carry these with me always! It has been proved like ten times since school started in September that I need this pack. So I think I either need a bigger backpack, or I just need to start leaving my art supplies at the school so I don't have to carry it with me all the time. I think I'll be spending more time at the school this semester. Do my homework there instead of in my room. Because lets be honest- I don't do homework when I get home. I sleep. So... there.
The point of this entry was last night I got stranded with my friend in Drumheller due to a sudden blizzard that just kind of appeared. So we had to run to IGA and find some pajamas and advil (oh advil! I need to carry that with me also) and water, and booked an express deal with what I thought was the sketchiest lodge in Drumheller. Turns out it's quite lovely! The teller at IGA had a lot of good things to say about it, and I was pleasantly surprised when we got there. It was warm and clean and had a very nice TV. We watched Face Off until a little after midnight, and since we were both getting sick we just went to sleep. But I had wished that I had my charger and my own clothes with me... But God was very good to us and provided in our time of need. IGA was closing, but the guy opened up for us. The lodge was cheap and warm, and it all worked out.
But gotta start carrying that pack with me when I get back home.
